In late 1902 the Finnish singer Elli Forssell was giving a performance in Riga. The concert drew a sophisticated gathering of city`s intellectuals including the Latvian artist Janis Rozentals. He not only immensely enjoyed the performance but had also fallen in love with Elli, and within a week had asked her father for Elli`s hand.
